You’ve Just Got to Be Quiet

Among Cormac McCarthy’s rich discussion of human suffering, meaning and the existence of God is this nugget worth pondering today.

{Black & White are the two characters in this play. No Names. Defined only by their skin color. Off stage before the play begins…Black (an evangelical Christian) saves White (an atheist professor) during a suicide attempt. He brings him back to his apartment where a rich dialogue takes place.}

Black: What would you do if Jesus were to speak to you?
White: I’m not virtuous enough
Black: You don’t have to be virtuous. You’ve just got to be quiet.
