Christianity is a way of life, not a series of religious meetings. “The nature of church is not reflected in a constant series of religious meetings led by professional clergy in holy places especially reserved to experience Jesus. Rather, it is mirrored in the prophetic way followers of Christ live their everyday lives in spiritual extended families, as vivid answers to the questions that society asks, and in the place where it counts most–in their homes.”

We are one day away from beginning the observation of Lent in our community and in much of the Christian Church worldwide. This past Saturday we began tuning our hearts toward what God may be wanting to do in us as we examined Jesus teaching at Nazareth and how Jesus challenges us to see him in ways that we don’t often expect.

This year we are joining with Spring Hill United Methodist Church for Ash Wednesday and will then journey together through Lent using this guide that my friend Brody Harper help me put together. Feel free to download it. Use it and journey with us.

Maybe a good framework to use is examining your intent and practices as you see them played out in your rituals, your story and your relationships. In other words what are the things you do over and over again and where do they say that your allegiances lie (rituals)? What are you involved in that says who you are? What would a biographer say is the arc of your life (story)? How are you relationships – with God, yourself, your family, your friends, your community (relationships)? Is there work that needs to be done in these areas?

Remember Lent is not just about giving something up? It’s about laying down thins that are keeping you from being everything that God created you to be and picking up things that do this. I’ll be honest Lent is a struggle. It is hard work. It takes commitment but just like the exodus, the exile the 3 days in the tomb, the waiting of the church there is redemption in the end and how we handle the waiting is as important as how we handle the victory.

Praying that you join the journey with us.

Peace ~

William

January = No blogging month

February = I’m back. In the blog world and literally. I just came back in from my first doctoral cohort at Fuller and once again the time there was amazing. The picture above is my cohort and as he has done before, Yahweh blessed me with some amazing new friends.

Mark Hopkins and Eddie Gibbs were absolute gems as leaders. Mark brilliantly led us through our dissertation design, something that makes my brain want to explode, and Dr. Gibbs stretchd our conversation and ideas of what the church is and is to be in the world. Dr. Gibbs has this incredible way of landing a one liner about every 10 minutes or so that makes you miss the next ten minutes because you are trying to ponder what he just said. Dr. Hopkins later told us when we were discussing it that Dr. Gibbs prays for those lines…those moments to make you think.

Over the next week or so I’m going to post some of those great liners for discussion, but for now…what are you praying for? I’m not asking you about the things you want or even things you are thankful for or need. The question is how specific are you with how Yahweh can and will use you with your gifting?

This Wednesday my friend Lucas Parry is doing his Christmas GO Concert in Spring Hill – It’ll be awesome! and its FREE! Just come with a love offering which will help by mosquito nets for kids in malaria affected areas in Africa.

This special GO Concert event has partnered with the UMC NOTHING BUT NETS Campaign! It will be a night of WORSHIP + JUSTICE – with inspirational messages from top Christian leaders on global justice, faith and spirituality by Shane Claiborne, Todd Phillips, Bill Hybels and Lucas Parry. Visit http://thegoconcert.com for more details.

Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.

The people of The United Methodist Church, along with Sports Illustrated, NBA Cares, the United Nations Foundation and several other groups, are raising funds to purchase bed nets to end malaria. You can join the cause and contribute money for bed nets that will keep children and families safe.

Malaria will kill over ONE MILLION this year! Join the fight against this disease by coming to the GO CONCERT on Wednesday, December 9 and bringing a love offering to save lives. It takes just $10 to buy a bed net and protect a child from malaria.

Hope to see you at Spring Hill United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 9 @ 7:00pm.

I’m excited to let you know about The Genesis Project. My friend Ken Edwards is part of this new avenue for pastors of church plants and developing churches to get away for moments of soul care and to build a network of support.

I love the table concept that is the built around shared common meals in a communal setting. This should provide amazing space for those involved to unplug, detox and do much needed work on their souls.

Space is limited so you wanna get your application in soon.
