The Leadership Summit
Session 1 – Bill Hybels
The High Drama of Decision Making
Leadership requires making tough calls.
So much of leadership is making decisions and much of it is high stakes!
How a Leader can master the art of decision-making >
Good Read Judgment
Do you have a decision making process that helps you get from point a to point b in a Christ honoring way?
Does the Bible way in on this?
Should we treat everyone with respect?
Should we admit it when we are wrong?
Should we tell the truth?
Should we lead with humility?
What would smart advisors advise me to do?
Other leaders have surely gone this way before
Proverbs 11:14
Listen but you have to weigh it & make the decision
Solomon’s decision about forced labor after he becomes king (2 sets of counselors)
What have you learned from the pain of past decisions; the gains of past decisions, what experiences can help you make a good decision?
Journaling helps you remember
Is the Spirit prompting me?
The Spirit whispers to us – an impression of where to go
Romans 8:6 (life & peace) – God saying even though it is hard you are on the right track
Leaders have to make decisions and take responsibility for them.
Who do you thank? Everyone involved in helping you to get there!
Who do you blame – no one. You take responsibility.
Staying clear about the bad decisions you have made keeps you clear about the learning that is going on in your life.
We all want to get better @ decision-making.
Some leaders have a framework and have a condensed version of experiences and begin to form proverbs/axioms to help them make decisions. If they work, they go public and it becomes a powerful force in the organization.
Abraham Lincoln was the president during the Civil War. – “The best way to destroy my enemy is to turn him into my friend.”
Example > how do we use this one from Lincoln to help us heal conflicts in our life.
Bob Galvin – “Create motion for motions sake”
Colin Powell – The Powell Principles (check your ego @ the door; promote a clash of ideas; reward your best performers & get rid of non-performers)
Do you as leaders reflect often enough that you are acting on your own axioms?
No matter how helpful other leaders axioms are, they will never be as important as the ones that life has given you.
From Hybels…
1) Vision Leads (Think bucket)
You have to continue to fill peoples buckets
You have to get the right people around the table
Do you believe that God is with you and help you in this?
Everyone is looking @ the senior leader; feeding off of their perspective/vision/passion
2) Facts Are Your Friends (Reveal)
Explorers, Beginners, Growers, Committed (See Reveal book/website)
Did bloggers/misunderstandings about Reveal hurt? Yes.
We are often misunderstood. But I would do it again.
3) When something feels funky, engage.
Don’t believe problems go away.
When you feel something growing/something off – engage with it.
Leaders call fouls (in meetings or whenever a line is crossed – call foul)
Sometimes a leader may have to call a foul on themselves
4) Take a flyer
Every once in a while you need something that takes your breath away
5) This is church
People – the priority/make time for them
